End of day, May 26. I'm tired to the bone, and I'm only about an hour from St. Louis. I had a fun day. Miles driven: 360. I left Grinnell kinda late that I wanted to. But then, why rush when I know I'm going know where, so I mioght just as well take it slowly. I left Grinnell kinda sad, the camcorder never worked again and when I went to ITS at the college, the AV Center Director something McRichie declined to give me one of their many camcorders. She posited that they will be used over the summer bu a class. I guess this is the perfect start to the trip? How Sad.
I viseted West Branck, Herbert Hoover's hometown. I got to know a lot about the man who is known the world over for causing the Great Depression. As Tocquiville observed years ago, the story of Hoover typifies democracy in America. The absence of the aristocracy meant that an ophan like Hoover would grow up to lead the greatest nation on Earth. How remarkable, this is not common among other democracies around the world. I saw his birthplace, the steams he played in, and even his father's garage. The guy manning the garage showed me how to shoe a horse. He said we shoe horses so that their hooves don't split, which they usually do if they are carring haevy loads. "So, when you go and but a horse, buy one with a black hoove rather than a lighter one which is not strong and easily splits"" he said.
"Don't speed, stick to the speed limit" my mum said before I left Grinnell. Well, she will happy to know that I been doing just as she advised. Maybe it's time I say something about the highway system in the US? Iowa, and Illinois they represent one of the arguments I have always heard in some of? the classes I have taken and books I have looked at. I remember a friend asking like "What happened to the Amrerican forests" The answer according to some book, is because they deforested all the forest cover that was once plenty across the land. That’s why when I been deiving today all I could see was flatland with not primary forest in sight. Since they deforested all their forests, some people in the third world believe that American environmentalists have no right to lecture them on the importance of forests. America got rich by felling all it's trees, therefore we will do the same, they asset.
I'ts time I turn in. I'm an hour away from St. Louis and so I will wake up at some point and inch closer to the city. I blew the fuse for my automatic doors again. So I have to open then manually. Night Night.
